Do you know the love of God? – John’s Gospel chapter 17 verses 20 to 25

Here we see the heart of Jesus for His disciples. Though His hour of suffering has come He prays for his disciples:
That his people will be one.
‘My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, 21 that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me. 22 I have given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we are one – 23 I in them and you in me – so that they may be brought to complete unity. Then the world will know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me.
John 17:20-23
How is this possible? By His Holy Spirit. He is one, and in all His people. Why does Jesus want this unity? That the world might know that Jesus is from God. His people a living witness of God’s grace to the world. Bound together by the one Saviour. Here is the heart of Christianity: that enemies of God may be made friends and made one.
That they might know God’s love
‘Father, I want those you have given me to be with me where I am, and to see my glory, the glory you have given me because you loved me before the creation of the world. 25 ‘Righteous Father, though the world does not know you, I know you, and they know that you have sent me.
John 17:24-25
To experience God’s love. He wants us to be with Him. Why such affection for His people? To bless them with His perfect presence, face to face.
God’s perfect, never ending, unbreakable love, the same as that within the Trinity. God does not hate you! You are hidden with Christ in God.
For as high as the heavens are above the earth,
Psalm 103:11-12
so great is his love for those who fear him;
12 as far as the east is from the west,
so far has he removed our transgressions from us.
