Jesus, the Word of God – John’s Gospel chapter 1, verses 1 to 5
John wrote his account of the life of Jesus for a purpose:
But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.
John 20:31
The Word. To the philosophers of John’s day it meant unknowable wisdom, but to the Jewish people it meant God’s expression of Himself.
In the beginning was the Word. That is, the Word is eternal, it was before time began.
The Word was with God. In eternal relationship with God, “face to face”.
The Word was God. Read on and see who this is – Jesus, who said “I and the Father are One” (John 10:31). No one less could save us.
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was with God in the beginning. 3 Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. 4 In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.
