Isaiah 11.

Some symbols of Christmas are the tree, ornaments, gifts, etc.

What are Isaiah’s symbols of Christmas? A stump, a branch and a banners. How do we make sense of these images?

A budding branch from a dry stump – Isaiah 11:1-5.

Jesus God’s Son, the great King who judges fairly and brings justice for all.

Jesse’s family is like a tree that has been cut down.
A new little tree will grow from its stump.
From its roots a Branch will grow and produce fruit.

A victory banner – Isaiah 11:10-16

“At that time” – Jesus is our great banner of victory. The gathering of all God’s people from the corners of the earth is going on. Victory and not defeat!

At that time, here is what the man who is called the Root of Jesse will do. He will be like a banner that brings nations together. They will come to him. And the place where he rules will be glorious.

A whole new world – Isaiah 11:6-9

When Jesus’ work is finished He will come again. That is sure. No more pain, destruction, sickness, death, separation or loneliness. See Revelation 21-22.

None of those animals will harm or destroy anything or anyone
on my holy mountain of Zion.
The oceans are full of water.
In the same way, the earth will be filled
with the knowledge of the Lord.
