Let There Be Light – Genesis chapter 1 verses 2 to 5
2 Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.
3 And God said, ‘Let there be light,’ and there was light. 4 God saw that the light was good, and he separated the light from the darkness. 5 God called the light ‘day’, and the darkness he called ‘night’. And there was evening, and there was morning – the first day.

The great Symphony of Creation.
The earth was formless and empty, unprepared for mankind. There was darkness, but God was present on the darkness. He is not distant from his creation, he was present. He still is.
What Day is it?
Christians who believe the Bible is God’s truth have many different views on what the days were. Whatever they were, we need to hold to these essential truths:-
- Genesis is historical truth;
- God created all out of nothing;
- Adam was a special creation of God;
- Human death came as result of Adam’s sin.
Whatever you conclude, always be diligent students of the Bible, and always courteous to each other.
But, what do we do about science?
Science looks at nature and makes the best explanations it can, but it is not a finished process, and cannot reach back to the beginning. Therefore there is the element of faith required, as there is for seeing Creation as a miraculous, supernatural event.
Day one: light and darkness
- The method of God’s creation. Verse 3a, God just spoke;
- The immediacy of God’s creation. Verse 3b, Nature obeyed Him immediately;
- The goodness of God’s creation. Verse 4, everything was as He planned it to be;
- The naming of God’s creation. Verse 5, He named day and night. To name is an act of ownership.
The Bible begins and ends with light, and the light of Jesus is revealed more and more.
6 For God, who said, ‘Let light shine out of darkness,’ made his light shine in our hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of God’s glory displayed in the face of Christ.
