The Son

The Son

Darkness to light

Nevertheless, there will be no more gloom for those who were in distress. In the past he humbled the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, but in the future he will honour Galilee of the nations, by the Way of the Sea, beyond the Jordan –

The people walking in darkness
    have seen a great light;
on those living in the land of deep darkness
    a light has dawned.
You have enlarged the nation
    and increased their joy;
they rejoice before you
as people rejoice at the harvest,
as warriors rejoice
    when dividing the plunder.

Isaiah 7:1-3

The northern tribes were in the firing line for conquest by Assyria. Rejected by God, for the people were worshipping idols and seeking help from the dead. They were in political, moral and spiritual darkness.

“NEVERTHELESS” – God is not limited to judgment, for a light will shine in Galilee.

Do we look at the darkness, and despair? Or look in faith at what He has already done, and has promised?

Defeat to Deliverance

For as in the day of Midian’s defeat,
    you have shattered
the yoke that burdens them,
    the bar across their shoulders,
    the rod of their oppressor.
Every warrior’s boot used in battle
and every garment rolled in blood
will be destined for burning,
will be fuel for the fire.

Isaiah 7:4-5

“As at Midian”, that is, a miracle, with no glory to man. Not just politically delivered. It was moral and spiritual sin that needed to be overcome. What weapon can do this? A Son.

The Son

For to us a child is born,
to us a son is given,
and the government will be on his shoulders.
And he will be called
    Wonderful Counsellor, Mighty God,
    Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
Of the greatness of his government and peace
    there will be no end.
He will reign on David’s throne
    and over his kingdom,
establishing and upholding it
    with justice and righteousness
from that time on and for ever.
The zeal of the Lord Almighty
    will accomplish this.

Isaiah 7:16-7

No ordinary child. His names shows this. No other King ever was like this. Crowned on the Cross. He, and He alone, will sit on David’s throne forever.

Wonderful, supernatural, divine counsellor. Is He your first place to run to, or your last resort.

Mighty God. Yahweh come in the flesh. He is not distant.

Everlasting Father. The character of His rule. Everlasting, not temporary, in His care. He welcomes you. He will never cast you out.

Prince of Peace. Firstly, peace with God, peace with others, cosmic peace at the last, and His kingdom will last for ever.

What will you do with the Light of the Son?
