A Biblical View of Man – Genesis chapter 2, verses 4 to 7
Where do we find purpose and identity? Without the worldview of the Bible many no longer have a solid place to find it. All that is left is subjective, saying “What, is the chief purpose of Man? To live out your truth and enjoy life till you die, for there is nothing after.” Be yourself!
- A Transition from Chapter 1: similar but different, focusing on the creation of mankind.
- The garden untended: A field without grain plants, for there was no one to tend it, nor to eat the bread from it.
- God makes man:
- From the Dust – from the common stuff of the earth God molds the form of man. In this mankind is like the animals.
- The Breath of Life: but God Himself breathes into man his own spirit, making him so much more than the animals. “In God’s image”. So intimate is this personal, self-giving God.
- What is Man?
- An exalted creature made in the image of God.
- A rebellious creature, that God gave His life to redeem.
4 This is the account of the heavens and the earth when they were created, when the Lord God made the earth and the heavens. 5 Now no shrub had yet appeared on the earth and no plant had yet sprung up, for the Lord God had not sent rain on the earth and there was no one to work the ground, 6 but streams came up from the earth and watered the whole surface of the ground. 7 Then the Lord God formed a man[c] from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being.
