What is the Gospel?

What is the Gospel?

The below is a transcript of the video.

Introduction

The Gospel literally means “good news.” It’s the good news of Jesus, His death, burial and resurrection

But in order for us to understand why it’s so significant and why it’s good news for us. We need to go back to ground zero: In the beginning.

In the Beginning

When God created Adam and Eve, everything was perfect.

The relationship Adam and Eve had with God was unfettered by sin and they communed in perfect harmony.

That is until, Adam and Eve disobeyed God and ate of the tree that they were told not to eat. And in doing so, they committed the first sin, the first display of rebellion and disobedience against God.

Our Fall

And as a result of their disobedience, a curse was placed on Adam and sin continues till this day:

“Wherefore as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin, and so death passed upon all men for that all have sinned.

Romans 5:12

What this verse is saying is that there are two truths that apply to all people.

One, Because Adam sinned, we by default are born sinners

Romans 3:10 says that no one is righteous, no not one.

Later on in that same chapter it says that all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.

Two, because we are sinners, we are going to die. But before I explain that verse, let’s define sin.

What is Sin?

Sin is any action that we do that fails to stack up to God’s holiness.

It is the rejection of God’s authority over our lives.

It is us saying that we don’t care what God says, We’re going to live our life the way we want to.

It is a spirit of rebellion.

For some people, they think that sin consists of “terrible” actions like murder, rape, homosexuality, fornication but the Bible says that sin includes also the “small” acts of defiance to like lying, cheating, stealing, disobedience and slandering.

So that includes me too.

And what we need to realise is that no sin, big or small, goes unpunished and we are all accountable for our actions.

There is a Punishment for Sin

If we go back to the second truth I mentioned earlier: because we are sinners we are going to die.

There is a penalty for our sin and the appropriate payment for sin is death (Romans 6:23) God would not be perfectly just if He did not punish sin.

But because He is perfect and He is holy, He has set a punishment for sin, and that is death. This refers to not only physical death but separation from God as well in Hell.

Jesus Comes to Save Us

We have to realise that this is terrible news for us.

But that’s where the Gospel or the Good News of Jesus comes in.

The Gospel is the remedy and solution to sin and death.

Now here is the Gospel in action: While men continued to live in sin Jesus came to earth and lived a sinless life.

He died on the cross, for you and me – because He loved us.

When Jesus died on the cross, all our sin fell on His shoulder and the judgment that we deserved was placed on Him.

Jesus literally died the death that we deserved and paid the price that we owed.

But that’s not all, he was buried for three days and he defeated sin and death by rising again on the third day proving to everyone once and for all that he was who she aid he was and that He was God.

What Does This Mean for Me?

So what does all this mean for us?

Three truths:

1. We’re all sinners, we’re all going to be punished for sin but Jesus died for us.
Jesus preached a clear message when he was here on earth: Repent and believe the gospel. Mark 1:15

2. That’s the response Jesus wants us to have on the Gospel, repent and believe the Gospel.

To repent means to turn away from our sin, our rebellion, our faulty thinking that we can live life on our own terms and turn to God.

3. Not only are we to repent, but we are also to believe the Gospel.

If thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.

Romans 10:9

Believing means to acknowledge that Jesus is God and that his death, burial and resurrection was sufficient for our sin.

We no longer have to rely on our own righteousness for salvation because Jesus paid it all on the cross.

That my friends is the Gospel. It’s good news for me and if you haven’t placed your faith in Jesus, it can be good news for you too.

Will you repent from your sin and believe in Jesus?
